Community Affairs
In 1985, District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau established the Community Affairs Unit. Since its inception, the Unit has served as a vital link between the District Attorney and the people of New York County. The staff of Community Affairs attends over 1,400 meetings each year. Representatives from Community Affairs meet with block associations, tenants' groups, landlords, social service providers, community coalitions, hospitals, site managers, parent associations, senior citizen groups, gay and lesbian organizations, business improvement districts, major corporations, community boards, libraries, and other community-based organizations seeking to solve neighborhood crime problems. In addition to direct work with citizens, the Community Affairs Staff meets on a regular basis with precinct commanders, narcotics officers and other governmental officials to deal with particular criminal problems or target locations. The Community Affairs Unit also administers the Office's Legal Bound educational program for youth.

Legal Hiring
This unit manages the process for recruiting and hiring all Assistant District Attorneys, the Summer Legal Intern Program, and other clinical internships. From August through early spring, hiring board members interview potential law school graduates in both the office and at over 40 law schools and job fairs across the country. The hiring board also interviews experienced attorneys throughout the year. In early winter, interns for summer internships are interviewed and selected. For more information, see the Legal Employment section of this web site. |
Legislative Affairs
|
The Legislative Affairs Unit works as a legislative advocate on behalf of the People of the State of New York. The Unit researches and analyzes proposed State legislation for its potential impact on the New York County DA's Office and the entire criminal justice system. The Unit tracks bills from their introduction through the State legislative system, to final signing by the Governor. Working as a member of the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York, the Legislative Affairs Unit writes position papers and helps develop legislative policy for the 62 District Attorney Offices throughout the State. The Unit also organizes the work of the New York State Law Enforcement Council, a statewide law enforcement organization. Each year the Law Enforcement Council publishes their legislative priorities, which are distributed to all the members of the State Assembly, the State Senate, and the Governor's Office in Albany. In 2009 the Council supports proposals that will require that all semi-automatic pistols be equipped with microstamping technology; provide penalties for aggravated identity theft and repeat misdemeanants; solve more crimes by expanding the DNA databank to include arrestees; and establish protections for police officers. |
