Notable Cases

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office handles more than 100,000 criminal cases each year. Below is a summary of recent notable cases handled by this Office in the areas of Cybercrime, Guns and Gangs, Major Economic Crimes, Special Victims, and Public Corruption. Each of these areas represents a major priority for our Office. For instance, we believe that the Internet is truly the crime scene of the 21st century. In addition to long-term investigations of sophisticated computer crime, the District Attorney’s Office handles approximately 300 new identity theft cases each month. And despite a significant decrease in street crime in New York City over the last decade, guns and gangs remain a serious threat to our safety, and to the future of our children. The Office takes a proactive approach to driving down gun violence and gang activity by combining aggressive prosecution with equally strong community outreach. The District Attorney’s Office also has a proud tradition of protecting vulnerable victims from crimes. In addition to the Special Victims’ Bureau, which prosecutes cases of Sex Crimes, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, and Elder Abuse, the Office’s Immigrant Affairs Program offers immigrants a safe place to report crime, and the new Hate Crimes Unit is staffed by prosecutors trained to investigate and prosecute bias crimes.

In the area of economic crime, we believe that the District Attorney’s Office has an obligation to act as a local investigating authority for the world’s markets. We accomplish this by launching investigations that target individuals and entities who misuse our financial institutions for illicit purpose, or whose conduct undermines the integrity and stability of our financial institutions and markets. Additionally, public corruption erodes the public’s confidence in government. The Public Integrity Unit was formed by District Attorney Vance in October 2010 investigates and prosecutes all levels of public corruption in government.
