Lateral applications are accepted year round; there is no deadline to submit an application.

When is the deadline to submit my application if I am a law clerk?
Applications are accepted beginning on August 1st. DANY strongly encourages clerks to apply before January 1st because employment decisions are made on a rolling basis.

May I find out who will be conducting my interview in advance?
All interviews are conducted by Hiring Board members who are experienced Assistant District Attorneys. You will be given the name of your interviewer(s) at the time of your interview.

How long are the interviews?
First and panel interviews are 30 minutes long; however, applicants should anticipate being here for one hour.

What will I need to bring to my first interview?
An official law school transcript, a writing sample, and a list of three academic or professional references. We do not require letters of recommendation. Please click here for more information.

How soon after my interviews can I expect to hear from the Legal Hiring Unit?
We interview and make offers on a rolling basis. There is no exact timeframe in the application/interview process; however, our office is committed to responding to all applications.

What if I have other offers and deadlines?
Please immediately inform the Legal Hiring Unit of any offers or deadlines you may receive during the interview process. We will make an effort to expedite your application in order to meet feasible deadlines.

What is a lateral candidate?
A lateral candidate has graduated law school and is currently practicing law. Lateral applicants must have passed the New York State bar and have at least one year of experience.

Do I have to be a US citizen?
Yes, Assistant District Attorneys must be US citizens at the commencement of employment.

Does the office conduct phone or video-conferencing interviews?
Where is the office located?
The office is located at One Hogan Place at the intersection of Centre Street and Leonard Street. The dedicated DANY entrance is on the south side of the Manhattan Criminal Court Building at 100 Centre Street. The Legal Hiring Unit is on the 8th floor in room 838.
